smart has launched the all-electric smart #2 Premium in China, holding a launch event in Guangzhou on November 5 for the two-seater city car that the brand describes as the return of the format it pioneered. The company said series production is underway and that the first customer deliveries in China are expected in the coming weeks, with European deliveries planned for 2027.
The smart #2 made its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show on October 12. According to smart, the limited smart #2 Couture Edition has since sold out in China and in all European markets where it has been offered so far. The company did not disclose how many Couture Edition units were available.
"As the pioneer of the two-seater city car, smart has always explored new possibilities for urban mobility," said Tong Xiangbei, global CEO of smart, adding that the company is "reinventing the concept that helped define our brand." Kang Yi, smart's global chief marketing officer, said that for smart "premium has never been defined by size," and that the new model keeps the character of the original two-seater while adding modern technology and greater comfort.
The car is styled by the Mercedes-Benz global design team and sits on smart's new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). The company says ECA was developed specifically for a compact electric vehicle rather than adapted from a platform designed for a larger car. The body uses smart's new-generation Tridion Cell Evo safety structure, which forms a protective cell around the cabin within the car's small footprint.
The smart #2 has a curb-to-curb turning circle of 6.95 metres, a rear-mounted electric motor with rear-wheel drive, and a five-link rear suspension that smart says is a first in its class. The company quotes a 35.8 kWh battery and a target combined WLTP range of 290 km.
Those battery and range figures apply to the European-market smart #2, according to smart. The range is preliminary and subject to final EU homologation, specifications may vary by market, and China-market specifications are to be confirmed locally. smart's tech workshop in Beijing in September had cited a target WLTP range of about 300 km.
smart said the car was developed jointly by its engineering teams in China and Europe and is manufactured in China, following a testing programme that covered winter driving in sub-zero temperatures as well as hot-weather conditions. China will be the first market to receive customer deliveries. In Europe, pricing, specifications, equipment and availability will be announced market by market.
